Program Overview

The Senior Prescription Drug Assistance Program (SPDAP) is a subsidy program established by the Maryland Health Insurance Plan (MHIP) through the medicare Modernization Act and the Health Insurance Safety Net Act of 2002, to provide premium assistance to moderate-income Maryland residents for the purchase of outpatient prescription drugs and who are eligible for Medicare and are enrolled in a prescription drug plan. The SPDAP replaces the Maryland Senior Prescription Drug Plan that was administered by CareFirst BlueCross BlueShield. Affiliated Computer Services (ACS), administers this program for the Maryland Health Insurance Plan Board of Directors.

Beginning in January 2006, SPDAP will pay up to $25.00 per month for an enrollees' Medicare Rx prescription drug plan premium, as long as the individual is enrolled in a Medicare approved Medicare Rx prescription drug plan or a Medicare Advantage prescription drug plan.
